A teacher in the Bronx, Joan Moon, created a project to raise funds for books that help kids understand what it's like to be a refugee:
"Young readers learn to sympathize with others through reading about others' experiences. The books that I am requesting are about characters from all walks of life. Some of these books are about refugees and their search for clean water. Some of these books are about kids in the foster care system. And some of these books are about racial segregation and the fight for civil rights. We can raise a compassionate generation by teaching young ones tolerance, love, respect, and equality, no matter somebody's background."
